We will forever be questioned. But, if we must, we will answer to those who we feel deserve an answer. Our Founders took an eclectic approach to designing our process. In other words, they took the good aspects from various sources.
Our Founders were first generation immigrants and had little to no knowledge of the Greek system. The assistance they received came from two fraternities on campus, Sigma Chi and a Veterans Fraternity. From both we adopted the structure for creating and writing a constitution.
Our pledging process was a major discussion among our founders, which ended in a shared vision - to be as unique as possible. Many of our founders were Masons and some where in the Military.
Our rituals in their original form were derived from the Mason brothers and the discipline aspect of our pledging process came from the experience of both the Masons and those in the Military. Marching in line, discipline, and the militant style pledging is undoubtedly a part of our culture. In many Latin American countries, all men who reach the age of 18 must serve in the Military. Discipline and Chivalry is also part of our machista attitude.
On the other hand, saluting, in today's form, has experienced an evolution. Saluting at the initial stages of our process only consisted of a greeting said in unison without motions. In the late 1980's, brothers incorporated motions to accompany the salutes in order to pay tribute to the big brothers and also market the organization. Today, it has become a display of pride and an avenue for our pledges to show their commitment and strength.
Did we copy any one organization? No! Are we unique? Yes! Do we have similar traits found in other organizations? Yes, otherwise, we would not be a Greek Fraternity. The bottom line is no organization created or can claim they created Marching, Saluting, Chanting, etc. All of the above were in existence way before the first fraternity was established. We can always hold our claim to being the first in a movement. Lambda Theta Phi was the catalyst for the Latino Greek Movement, and this no one can deny!
Fraternally, Jorge Diaz Former National President
